Perplexed Poe Essay Example For Students

Perplexed Poe Essay Poe is a very complicated author. His literary works are perplexed, disturbing, and even grotesque. His frequent illnesses may have provoked his engrossment in such things. In 1842 Dr. John W. Francis diagnosed Poe with sympathetic heart trouble as well as brain congestion. He also noted Poes inability to withstand stimulants such as drugs and alcohol (Phillips 1508). These factors may have motivated him to write The Tell-Tale-Heart, The Cask of Amontillado, and The Black Cat. All of these stories are written in or around 1843, shortly after Poe became afflicted. His writing helped him to cope with his troubles and explore new territory in literature. Poes interest in the supernatural, retribution, and perverse cause them to be included in his burial motifs; therefore sustaining his interest. There is a common thread laced through each subject, but there is variation in degrees of the impact. The supernatural is the phenomena of the unexplained. With this comes an aura of mystery and arousal of fear. Death in itself is the supreme mystery. No living human being can be certain of what happens to the soul when one dies. It is because of this uncertainty that death is feared by many. These types of perplexing questions cause a reader to come to a point of indifference within one of Poes burial motifs. One is uncertain of how the events can unfold, because a greater force dictates them. Reincarnation in The Black Cat is a supernatural force at work. There is some sort of orthodox witchcraft-taking place. The whole story revolves around the cat, Pluto, coming back to avenge its death. One can not be sure how Plutos rebirth takes place, but it is certain that something of a greater force has taken hold. The cats appearance is altered when the narrator comes across it the second time. There is a white spot on the chest by slow degrees, degrees nearly imperceptibleit had, at length, assumed a rigorous distinct outlineof the GALLOWS (Poe 4). Foretelling the narrators fate a confinement tool appears on the cats chest. This also foreshadows the cats confinement in the tomb. It reappears like a disease to take vengeance on a man that has committed horrid crimes. I was answered by a voice within the tomb! By a cry, at first muffled and broken, like the sobbing of a child, and quickly swelling into one long, loud and continuous scream, utterly anomalous and inhumana howla wailing shriek, half of honor and half of triumph (Poe 6). Pluto is like Poes reoccurring illness it keeps coming back just when he thinks it is gone. This can be related to the ever-looming question of why people become afflicted with disease. Is it punishment for wrongdoing? Some religions find this to be the answer. Poes intrigue in reincarnation may have been in that of his own immortality. Metaphysical events take place in The Tell-Tale-Heart. The perpetrator is driven by some unknown source to reveal his evil deed. The paranoia he feels is very real to him. I fancied a ringing in my earsit became more distinctI found that the noise was not within my earsIt is the beating of the hideous heart of the old man (Poe 3). Ringing is heard only in the mans head, but because a impetus has compelled him to believe otherwise he is inclined to reveal his misdeed. The source of the mans voices is from a force within himself. Ones soul is an unexplainable power, which governs over the body. The murder of the old man is committed in passion. Disregarding any rational thoughts the narrator is engaged in his own desires. His unconcern for mankind causes his own insanity. .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50 , .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50 .postImageUrl , .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50 , .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50:hover , .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50:visited , .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50:active { border:0!important; } .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50:active , .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50 .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0c7a84f57ad0bd779a73a90e5cb32a50:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: describe producer/consumer, predator/prey, and parasite/host relationships... The story of an hour short essay Essay Example

The story of an hour short essay Essay Irony in The Story of an Hour. In The Story of an Hour Mrs. Mallard is greeted by her sister and friends who speak very gentle and in euphemistic talk of the death of her beloved husband. She weeps for a great while, trying to think of how she is going to go on. After she has cried all she could, she retreats to her room to mourn in solitude. She sits and looks out the window, and is slowly becoming more and more adapted to the thought of her husband being gone. Eventually she is overcome with a longing for freedom, and is relieved her husband has passed on. She loved him sometimes, but she is now eeling her own sense of being. She goes back down the stairs feeling better than ever, and more full of ease. As she reaches the bottom of the stairs, she hears the door open. Brantley Mallard is walking through the door, and as soon as she sees him she dies ofa heart attack. Irony can be seen in most everyday situations. Whether it be an ambulance driver running over the impaired patient, or in classic movies like the Wizard of Oz when the cowardly lion only wants courage and discovers he had it all along. Sometimes it may be quite humorous, other times tragic. Much like in The Story of an Hour. The irony pulsates in this story, mostly tragic, some funny. She seems very much upset at the thought of her husband no longer being around at first. After her fit of crying, she realizes how wonderful her life would be. She realized all these years she has had a horrible life with this man. She loved him sometimes and thought she was free, free, free. When he arrives back home without a single scratch on him, Mrs. Mallard dies of a heart attack. This is also irony for the reader. One would suspect Mrs. Mallard to stay in her period of grieving for a long amount of time, not see her become more alive than before in a single hour. A short while later, she is surprised with the return of her husband that results in a quick death of Mrs. Mallard. She is thought to be dying of a sudden shock of happiness, but she died from the overwhelming shock of disappointment. She was finally Free, free, free to do as she wished, and to live as fully as she had always wanted, for those few short moments.
